Learning objectives
This course will provide students with an understanding of:
-The nutritional needs of people in the various life stages. The life cycle groups are infancy, childhood, adolescence, pregnancy, lactation, and elderly.
- basic epidemiological concepts and application,
- Identify the nutrition as a tool for achievement of optimal health
Expected learning outcomes
The student will develop critical thinking skills in relation to the principles of dietetics, in order to favorably affect food consumption habits of people

Course syllabus
The program of the Principles of Dietetic includes:
· Analysis of the scientific rationale for assessing the dietary reference values of nutrients and energy for the Italian population (LARN)
· Food-based dietary guidelines for Italian population: general concepts and their scientific bases. Evaluation of the international iconographic representations of healthy diet such as the Food Pyramid and My Plate.
· Analysis of dietary reference values of energy and nutrients for adult population (male and female), even in particular physiological conditions (pregnancy, breastfeeding), and in the elderly.
· Dietary reference values for children, adolescents and athletes.
· Importance of eating habits for maintaining health and preventing diet-related diseases.

Prerequisites for admission
To adequately address the contents of the course, students should have already acquired basic notions of human nutrition and biochemistry.
Teaching methods
The lessons are all theoretical sessions in the classroom with direct involvement of the students in discussion of topics
Teaching Resources
There are no textbooks suitable for the topics discussed. The slides of the lessons are uploaded on the Ariel platform, and references of the scientific studies cited in the lessons are available from UNIMI digital library.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam is an oral test on the course topics. Students are invited to deepen, through the study of one or more scientific publications, a topic addressed in class. During the exam, in addition to evaluating the knowledge of the topics of course, it will be also evaluated the ability to understand aim, protocol and critically discuss results and conclusions of the studies chosen. The final vote is given out of thirty.
