Learning objectives
The purpose of the course is:
- to consolidate in students knowledge of the system of sources of law
- to facilitate their familiarization with methods of interpreting the Constitution and other sources of law
- to refine their awareness of the implications, as to the horizontal division of powers in force in Italy, of the choices concerning the criteria for systematizing the sources of law and the methods of interpreting the sources of law
- to improve their ability to respond appropriately and coherently to questions concerning law
- to make them aware of the special responsibilities of lawyers to promote justice
Expected learning outcomes
After the course, students should be able to:
- know the sources of law
- interpret and apply law from judicial, legislative, and administrative sources
- exercise proper professional and ethical responsibilities to the legal system
- perform legal analysis and reasoning
- speak cogently about legal concepts
- engage, individually and as part of a team, in legal problem-solving

Sources of law:
- Italian Constitution and other constitutional sources
- Statutes
- Regulations
- New sources of law
- Italian law, international law and European Union law
Prerequisites for admission
The course is intended for anyone who has an interest in law and is well prepared for class discussion. It does not require any prior knowledge of law.
Teaching methods
The course, having a seminar structure, will consist of two weekly lectures, according to the schedule and timetable published at the beginning of the semester.
During the lecture, the lecturer will introduce the topic, which will then be discussed in class, making use of the lecture materials (law texts, judgments, administrative practices, scholar articles) that will have been assigned ahead of the lecture and made available online.
Teaching Resources
At the end of the week's scheduled lectures, the lecturer will upload to Ariel the material (law texts, judgments, administrative practices, scholar articles) to be read in preparation for the following week's lectures.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Credits will be awarded following positive judgment made by the lecturer. For this purpose, the following evaluation criteria will be used:
- Attendance (minimum 80% of classes);
- Completion of assigned readings;
- Participation in class discussions, voluntary or by request of the lecturer.
