The history of republican Italy is a complex history, which historians have been facing trying to valorise the multiplicity of possible sources: documents, oral sources, audiovisual sources, historiography, literature...
This workshop proposes an exercise and at the same time a journey through the history of republican Italy, between a first preparatory part of a methodological nature and a second part of exercise and excavation among the archives of political figures (Angelo Tasca, Pietro Secchia, Leo Valiani), the archives of institutions (the Feltrinelli Institute Library), documentary collections (the fund on the New Italian Left), posters and affiches (the Italian political posters of the post-World War II period), all preserved at the Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Foundation.
Expected learning outcomes
In this workshop, students learn: how to research archival papers; how to use inventories (when they exist); how to optimise time resources and the need to dig deep within fonds; what and how to ask the archivist for advice; how to collect, preserve and select sources; how to alternate between them and how to use them in a complementary way for historical reconstruction. Finally, they will learn how to connect individual histories and sources with the general history of the country.
