Learning objectives
Following the associated class of the 2nd year, this professionalizing laboratory class aims to show to the students the practice of the above-mentioned technologies together with the associated experimental approaches normally performed in a Research Biomedical Laboratory. In this context, the student will learn what are the duties of the so-called "Laboratory Manager" in all organization and practical steps required to perform these work methodologies.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the class, the student will acquire knowledge on theory and practice of the following techniques: Cytogenetics and Molecular Cytogenetics, Methodologies of Enzymatic Measurements and Flow Cytometry that are used to determine the diagnosis and the prognosis of genetic and immunologic diseases (Chromosome diseases, paediatric immune-deficiencies, auto-inflammatory diseases, storage diseases like Amyloidosis).
Single course

This course can be attended as a single course.

Course syllabus and organization

Single session

Responsible
Course syllabus
Methodologies for the diagnosis of genetic diseases due to number or structure (balanced and imbalanced) chromosomal anomalies, of genetic diseases with immune phenotypes (primary immune-deficiencies, auto-inflammatory diseases, and storage diseases like amyloidosis). This program will be performed in 3 different modules:
1) Cytogenetics
Main techniques of classical and molecular cytogenetics and applications: techniques of chromosomal preparations, banding techniques. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). Array-CGH analysis.
2) Enzymatic Arrays
Main approaches to measure circulating enzymes indicating organ damage or failures
3) Flow Cytometry
Principles of glow cytometry, clinical applications, and main methodologies of analysis both conventional and of last generation.

Each one of these 3 modules will be performed with both frontal and practical lessons.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic Knowledge of Genetics, Immunology and Translational Medicine for the Biomedical Laboratory Technician.
Teaching methods
The course is divided into a series of lectures with slide shows in Power Point. All lecture slides are uploaded to the Ariel website of the University of Milan
Teaching Resources
The lectures slides will be uploaded on the Ariel platform
MilanPrincipi di citogenetica di Mandrioli.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The assessment of learning takes place through a written test lasting 60 minutes. The test is based on quizzes with multiple choice and open-ended questions distributed among the 3 different modules. The exam is considered successfully completed (Approved) if the student has acquired a minimum score of 18/30 in each one of the 3 modules of the course.
