Learning objectives
The aim of the Veterinary Hygiene course is for students to develop knowledge and understanding of the etiology, prevention, prophylaxis and management of the main infectious diseases of livestock farms.
Expected learning outcomes
1. Knowledge and understanding: At the end of the course, the student will have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the general and specific biosecurity measures regarding prevention and hygienic-sanitary management of infectious diseases in livestock farms.
2. Applying knowledge and understanding: the student will have to demonstrate that they have knowledge and concepts useful in order to apply the appropriate biosecurity measures to avoid the onset and spread of infectious diseases in livestock farms. He will have to demonstrate that he is able to make a correct assessment of the farm critical points for the purpose of containing infectious diseases.
3. Making judgments: the student will have to demonstrate the ability to critically argue the information acquired. In this sense, specific farm visits are directed for the evaluation of the hygienic-sanitary critical points.
4. Communication: The student must be able to present the skills acquired with an appropriate terminology during the lectures, the practical exercises and in the open-ended exam questions.
5. Lifelong learning skills: the student will have to demonstrate the ability to use the acquired knowledge to be able to manage the maintenance of an adequate hygienic-sanitary standard of livestock farms, according to the provisions of current legislation, with the help of available sources of knowledge and a good mental organization.

Basic concepts of biosecurity (4 hours)
Planning of surveillance, control and prevention interventions against infectious and contagious diseases (6 hours)
Disinfection protocols applied in livestock farms (4 hours)
Basic concepts of veterinary epidemiology (4 hours)
Basic criteria for programming prophylactic interventions in livestock (4 hours)
Diseases subjected to control and eradication in Italy and European Community (6 hours)
Control and prevention of the main infectious diseases of livestock and zoonoses (12 hours).

Organization and activities of a microbiological diagnostic laboratory (4 hours)
Health data processing of livestock farm (4 hours)
Audit in livestock farms (8 hours).
Prerequisites for admission
Basic knowledge of microbiology and general pathology are recommended
Teaching methods
Lectures and practical activities in the teaching laboratory and in livestock farms.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Exam methods: written exam.
Type of test: written test with closed and open answers.
Duration of the test: 90 minutes
Evaluation parameters: ability to discursively organize knowledge; critical reasoning skills competence in the use of specialized vocabulary, precision in answers.
Type of evaluation used: vote out of thirty.
Number and types of tests that contribute to the final assessment: 1 written test.
There are no intermediate tests.
Test results communication method, in the case of written tests: outcome communicated via e-mail by registering on the SIFA online .
There are no differentiated verification methods between attending and non-attending students.
