Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the cultural tools to able:
· To recognise the individual and general population health needs
· To evaluate data and to use them to promote and maintain health at individual and population level
· To promote health for all population against infectious and chronic diseases
· To know how to manage hospital hygiene to prevent healthcare infection control in hospital and community
· To recognise health problems in community and workplaces to manage them correctly
· To know the most important laws which rule the health organization
· To be able to read the organizational and economic variables which distinguish the national and regional health services
· To know the management of the health services in the community
· To know the most important elements of health economics with particular attention on cost/benefits ratio of diagnostic therapeutic and preventive procedures and the ways to apply them on medical decisions
· To know the concept of global health in order to facilitate the learning of the great phenomena that affect health and access to prevention and treatment at a global level.
Expected learning outcomes
Al termine dell'insegnamento lo studente dovrà essere in grado di:
· Identificare i bisogni di salute della popolazione
· Promuovere la salute del singolo e della collettività nei confronti delle malattie infettive e cronico degenerative
· Prevenire le infezioni correlate all'assistenza in ospedale e comunità
· Identificare correttamente i livelli di organizzazione del servizio sanitario nazionale e regionale
· conoscere sfide e "futuri" del settore della salute Italiano: le implicazioni per la gestione delle aziende sanitarie e per i professionisti
· Comprendere i concetti-chiave di Global Health, il Global burden of Disease e gli Obiettivi di Sviluppo Sostenibile dell'ONU (SDG).

Course syllabus and organization

Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of biological disciplines, in particular immunology, immunopathology, microbiology and statistics needed.
Assessment methods and Criteria
A written examination on all the subjects of the course. Both MCQ and open question with a short answer are submitted in 60 minuts time. A framework, based on the number of correct answers is used to assess the vote. No intermediate proofs are provided.
Public health
Course syllabus
1. General and applied hygiene. Health/disease determinants; causes and risk factors; epidemiology and epidemiological methodology; health promotion and disease prevention; principles of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention; prevention of communicable diseases (notification and surveillance, isolation, diagnostic assessment, disinfection and sterilization, vaccines and vaccinations, etc.); prevention of chronic degenerative diseases (screening); epidemiology and prevention of the main vaccine preventable diseases; food-borne diseases; emerging infections; health-care associated infections.
2.Health services organization: Health Service in Transition, Analysis of general principles and values in health care systems and their performance using different data set. The Italian National health service. The principal challenges a health service faces discussed with respect to hospital and primary care. Risk Management: definitions and case study. The quality of all the elements of the process of care. The methods to assess quality.
3.Global Health: Key concepts and definition of global health (GH); Evolution of GH from tropical medicine to public health and international health; Global burden of disease, epidemiological transition and progress in health indicators; Recent phenomena and future of global health; Social and economic determinants of health; Era of the sustainable development goals (SDGs); Tuberculosis as a model in global health burden and response; the World Health Organization and other major actors in GH; International Cooperation; the great challenges: migrations and climate change.
4.Health education and education for Health: community interventions and patient health education; hot to promote protective behaviors and to reduce at risk behaviors through educational interventions; the contribute of neurosciences to Health educationd and promotion; educational interventions with pre-teens adn teens; theoretical models to develop and implement education programs in the public health arena.
