Learning objectives
The workshop aims to make students aware of the cultural relevance of the history of book forms, both as a historical-social phenomenon, and as a central element of the textual transmission in its material dimension.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: students will know, from a comparative perspective, the history and evolution of book forms between the end of the ancient world and the age of printing between East and West.
Skills: students will be able to describe a manuscript in its parts and evaluate its geographical and chronological context of production.

Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of ancient languages is not required.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons; participated lessons with presentation of manuscripts preserved in the Ambrosiana Library. The lessons will be mostly held at the Ambrosiana Library.
Teaching Resources
Bibliography will be provided in class by the teacher and, later, uploaded on the Ariel website of the workshop.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Final mark: Approved/Not approved. Evaluation will result from the students' attendance and their active participation. A final practical test is foreseen consisting in the description of a manuscript.
