Learning objectives
The workshop enriches students' technical-professional skills, in order to allow them to find employment on archaeological excavation sites, in museums and superintendencies at the end of the training course. It also represents a required improvement to the professional training for students aiming to go on in scientific research.
Expected learning outcomes
Through this workshop students are provided with bibliographic and tools necessary to design and carry out a correct catalogue of the material culture brought to light during archaeological excavations. Particular attention is paid to different typologies of ceramics, metal and glass instruments.

Course syllabus
This workshop aims to provide the basic information about the study of the archaeological finds through lessons and practical activities. The course will provide theoretical, methodological and practical indications for the study, analysis and interpretation of contexts of archaeological finds from excavations. The lessons will focus in particular on ancient pottery, providing basic technical and technological knowledge, and will investigate in particular the Roman pottery wares. For each ware, the history of studies and main repertoires, manufacturing technology, production and distribution areas will be systematically illustrated, also with attention to the consumption and marketing habits. Finally, the most recent scientific literature on the subject and the use of numerous online databases will be illustrated.
Visits to Archaeological Museums are planned, in order to become more familiar with the ceramic finds.

Prerequisites for admission
No specific requirements. The workshop is open to bachelor (Cultural Heritage) and master (Archaeology) degree students. Having already passed at least one of the main archaeological exams and taken part to an excavation or the archaeological drawing workshop is recommended.

The students, during the practical activities, will be evaluated by the teacher about the achieving the intending goals of the workshop. The attendance is mandatory (at least the 90% of the hours).

Lessons will be held in classroom. If the sanitary emergency gets worse, the lessons wil be held online (Micorosoft Teams).
Course syllabus
This workshop aims to provide the basic information about the study of the archaeological finds through lessons and practical activities. The students will learn the guidelines about the first field operations dealing with the finds, then will be taught about the detailed classification criteria and the related bibliography in order to draw up the finding card and the calalog. In the wide frame of the type of artefacts that could be found in any archaeological site, a particular focus will be given to the ones (such as pottery) that are more common and/or very reliable for the chronology. Finally, the students will be introduced to the most updated guidelines for the data publication according to the current scientific literature.

Teaching methods
Lessons and practical activities will be held in classroom. Other training activities will be conducted independently by the students. Some topics could be deepened by consulting specific scientific contributions that will be indicated.
