Learning objectives
This course aims to strengthen linguistic skills in Modern Standard Arabic by teaching students advanced morphosyntactic structures and specialist vocabulary. Another goal is to reinforce students' ability to understand, rephrase and analyse complex texts of various kinds (sector-specific texts, non-fiction, literary products). Notably, the course reflects on the complex structure of the Arabic language and explores some of its peculiarities from an internal perspective, by investigating the relations between Classical Arabic (fuṣhā) and Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and comparing MSA to one or more Arabic dialects. In addition to encouraging a reflection on linguistic variation, the course strengthens students' proficiency in the dialect studied, and/or in oral mediation.
Expected learning outcomes
- Identifying advanced morphosyntactic structures and vocabulary in a variety of text types (sector-specific texts, non-fiction, literary products);
- Mastering the morphosyntactic structures and vocabulary needed to be able to rephrase texts and express oneself orally and in writing;
- Analysing the stylistic features and discourse strategies used in a text;
- Engaging in a critical discussion on the grammatical and linguistic topics covered during the course;
- Autonomously deploying the comprehension, production and translation strategies presented during the course;
- Improving one's own proficiency in the Arabic dialect studied and/or in oral mediation.
