Corso integrato di ortottica oftalmologia pediatrica e strabismo
A.Y. 2025/2026
Learning objectives
The integrated course aims to provide students with advanced theoretical and practical training in the assessment, functional diagnosis, and clinical management of pediatric ophthalmologic conditions and strabismus. The curriculum combines knowledge from ophthalmology, orthoptics, pediatrics, neuropsychiatry, and psychology to foster a multidimensional approach to children with visual and ocular disorders. Special emphasis is placed on the development of visual function, the diagnosis and management of ocular deviations, pediatric ocular pathologies, and relational and communication skills with both
the child and their family. The course prepares students to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams for the comprehensive care of pediatric patients.
the child and their family. The course prepares students to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams for the comprehensive care of pediatric patients.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the integrated course, students will be able to:
Understand visual function development and the key milestones of visual maturation in children.
Recognize and contribute to the clinical management of major refractive errors and amblyopia.
Assess and classify various types of strabismus and ocular motility disorders in pediatric patients, applying advanced orthoptic techniques.
Recognize and assist in the management of major pediatric ocular diseases.
Collaborate in the care pathways of children with complex syndromes and neurological disabilities affecting visual function.
Understand key clinical and care aspects of general and specialist pediatrics relevant to orthoptic practice.
Integrate principles of health psychology and effective communication techniques in interactions with children and their families.
Actively collaborate within multidisciplinary teams in the comprehensive management of pediatric ophthalmology patients.
