Learning objectives
The integrated course aims to provide students with advanced theoretical and practical training in the pathology, diagnosis, and medical and surgical treatment of the anterior segment of the eye. It covers the main pathological conditions of the ocular surface, cornea, and crystalline lens, modern techniques in refractive and cataract surgery, and the fundamentals of clinical assessment and instrumental imaging of the anterior segment. Special emphasis is placed on the evolving role of the orthoptist as a key operator in diagnostic-therapeutic and surgical pathways. The ultimate goal is to develop cross-disciplinary skills enabling students to actively contribute to the assessment, monitoring, and management of patients with anterior segment disorders within a multidisciplinary team.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the integrated course, students will be able to:
Understand the anatomical, physiological, and pathophysiological foundations of the ocular surface, cornea, and crystalline lens.
Recognize and contribute to the clinical management of major ocular surface, corneal, and crystalline lens disorders.
Understand the principles and techniques of the main anterior segment surgical procedures (refractive surgery, corneal transplantation, cataract surgery).
Actively collaborate in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative pathways of refractive and cataract surgery.
Perform and interpret advanced instrumental imaging and clinical assessment of the ocular surface and anterior segment.
Integrate clinical and instrumental data to effectively contribute to patient monitoring and follow-up.
Operate as a key operator in synergy with the ophthalmology team within the medical and surgical management pathways of anterior segment disorders.
