Culture of Japan Ii
A.Y. 2025/2026
Learning objectives
This course is designed as a continuation of Culture of Japan I, as it explores Japanese culture from the end of World War II to the present. The course focuses on the interaction and mediation between endogenous and exogenous factors which contributed to the cultural production and evolution of the country, and to the development of the Japanese identity. Drawing on the concepts of orientalism and soft power, the course provides a critical analysis of the works of modern and contemporary scholars (not only from Japan, but also from other countries) who, in accordance with their professional role, provided their personal interpretation of Japanese society and culture, aligning or not with the socio-cultural and ideological mainstream of their times. The goal of the course is to provide new and alternative insights into Japanese culture, so that students can form their own critical opinion on the transformations of modern and contemporary Japan.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will have acquired a broad and robust knowledge of the sources examined in the class, being able to detect differences and similarities in a comparative perspective, based on a solid theoretical background. This expertise will enable them to understand the processes that led to the construction of Japan's cultural identity, and to critically reflect on its difficult relationship with international actors.
