Learning objectives
The course aims to impart students with detailed and in-depth knowledge of the historical and social dynamics that shaped Eastern Europe between the 19th and 20th centuries, providing a solid historical grounding for understanding ongoing processes in this important area of the European continent.
Expected learning outcomes
The course aims to introduce students to historical reflection on Eastern Europe between the 19th and 20th centuries, with appropriate references to earlier and later periods. It will introduce them to the use of both published and unpublished sources, as well as essential printed and online bibliographic tools for the study of the region. Through the analysis of real-world examples, students will be introduced to various historical research methodologies and to the study of archival records. By the end of the course, students will be able to critically read primary sources and scholarly texts related to the historical period examined and to formulate independent reflections on major historical and historiographic issues. These skills will be developed through continuous and direct engagement with the instructor in the classroom, particularly through critical analysis of texts assigned for individual study and participation in seminar-style activities. These will include student presentations and discussion—individually or in groups—of selected reading materials proposed by the instructor.
Non-attending students may use any teaching materials made available by the lecturer on the Ariel platform and may deepen their understanding of key topics by reading selected texts agreed upon with the lecturer. They may also seek guidance from the lecturer via email or during office hours.
