Learning objectives
This year the course will be focused on the analysis of the socioeconomic structures of contemporary Japan, discussed in a historical perspective and within the regional and global context. The goal is to provide the student with the knowledge and the instruments for a critical appraisal of the main tendencies and of the scholarly interpretations of Japanese post-war economic development.
Expected learning outcomes
As a result, by the end of this course the students will have acquired a wide knowledge of the socioeconomic structures of contemporary Japan, their evolution in the post-war period and their distinctive characteristics analysed in a comparative perspective. This knowledge will enable the student to understand the current reality and the main trends that are shaping and changing the Japanese economy and society.

Course syllabus
The course examines ideas and writings of intellectuals, artists, and institutional figures who, within their respective professional fields, have provided interpretations of Japanese culture during the modern or contemporary era—either aligned with or in opposition to the socio-cultural or ideological mainstream of their historical contexts.
Prerequisites for admission
The course is intended for students who already have a good knowledge of Japanese history from the 15th century onwards.
Teaching methods
Classroom lectures will be conducted by the instructor. Some lectures on specific topics will be given by experts invited by the instructor.

Assessment methods and Criteria
At the end of the course, students will be required to pass a written exam. The exam aims to assess their critical thinking skills and ability to form independent judgments—developed through the debates suggested and led by the instructor during the lessons—regarding the processes of constructing Japan's identity, its complex relationship with international realities and the main debates concerning modern and contemporary Japanese society.
