Learning objectives
The integrated course aims to provide students with a solid and integrated theoretical and practical background in physical optics, physiological optics, and applied ophthalmic optics. It covers the functioning of the eye as an optical system, the pathophysiology of vision and major refractive errors, techniques for measuring and correcting ametropias, and the related optical instrumentation.
Particular emphasis is also placed on the analysis of color vision alterations and the use of key optical diagnostic instruments. The goal is to develop advanced skills enabling students to contribute actively and competently to the refractive and functional assessment of patients, and to collaborate effectively with the ophthalmology team in the prescription and monitoring of optical corrections.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Understand the basic physical and geometrical principles of optics and apply them to the analysis of simple and complex optical systems.
Describe the functioning of the eye as an optical system and the physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms of refraction and vision.
Recognize and assess major refractive errors and correctly apply optical correction techniques.
Understand the physiology of color vision and the main congenital and acquired alterations; correctly perform and interpret related diagnostic tests.
Correctly perform objective and subjective refraction.
Understand the functioning and clinical use of basic and advanced optical instrumentation for refractive assessment.
Collaborate effectively with the ophthalmology team in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of refractive alterations and vision dysfunctions.
