Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with elements in the fields of legislation, technical standardization, and business organization, with a particular attention to the activities related to food industry, distribution and service. In more practical terms, one of the course's goal is to provide the notion required to pass the exam for the access to the Biologists' Italian professional associations (National Federation of Biologist Orders).
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should have developed the skills to fulfill with a self-confident and productive approach a future professional role, according to specific institutional competences.

Legislation
Legal rules, religious rules, ethics rules. Connections between legal and ethics rules. The Codes of Ethics. Introduction to legal rules. The separation of powers. The principal levels of production of legal rules. The efficacy of legal rules in time. The most important types of sources of legal rules: Constitution, constitutional laws, ordinary laws, decree-laws, legislative decrees, regional laws, regulations for enforcement of laws, European regulations and directives. The antinomies between sources of law and their solution. The legal rules for the profession of biologist. The awarding of professional engagements by Public Administrations: general profiles of criminal, civil, administrative/accounting, disciplinary and managerial liability. Legal rules for animal experimentation: European and national rules. Conscientious objection to animal experimentation in the national rules. The food safety.

Legal rules for italian biologists: structural laws.
Rules concerning biologist knowledge (food safety, biological risk, environment, cosmetology).
International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN), Italian Organization for Standardization (UNI).
Quality systems. Conceptual evolution: from voluntary trends to legal requirements.

Prerequisites for admission
No preliminary knowledge is required.
Teaching methods
Interactive frontal lessons integrated by powerpoint presentations. Students are stimulated to actively participate to the lessons in order to improve their critical ability.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Oral exam consisting in open questions aimed to assess the knowledge of the student about legal and deontological rules.
The ability of the student to apply international and national standards for business organization is also evaluated.
Results are immediately notified to students.
Partial exams during the teaching semester for students attending the course are not planned.
