Restoration of Cultural Heritage
A.Y. 2025/2026
Learning objectives
The course is aimed at training Conservation Scientists, through the acquisition of advanced theoretical, methodological, and technical skills in the field of Conservation and Restoration, with a specific focus on movable works. The teaching aims to develop the student's ability to critically and independently address conservation issues, encouraging dialogue and cooperation with the various professional figures involved in restoration interventions. The educational program includes the study of constitutive materials and painting execution techniques, with particular emphasis on wall paintings, panels, and canvas from Antiquity to the modern era. The training activities involve exercises in recognizing artistic techniques, original materials, and products of alteration, integrating such knowledge with the analysis of the potential offered by diagnostic methodologies.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will need to develop the ability to read and analyze the material traces that reveal the execution techniques used in works of art, as well as any previous restoration interventions. They will be able to identify the phenomena of alteration or deterioration of the original and restored materials, allowing for an accurate evaluation of the conservation status of historical and artistic artifacts. Furthermore, it will be essential for the student to know all the phases of a conservation project, from diagnostic investigations, both invasive and non-invasive, to modern restoration procedures. They must be capable of selecting the most appropriate diagnostic techniques for a correct material and structural analysis of the work. The methodological approach will be enriched by an independent critical capacity in analyzing each phase of the conservation intervention, thanks to a balanced interdisciplinary perspective.
