Learning objectives
The teaching workshop aims to provide a first introduction to the study of Classical Armenian (5th century). Topics to be covered include: reading and writing; the basic elements of ancient Armenian culture and literature; the main learning tools for Classical Armenian; the position of Armenian within the Indo-European language family.
Expected learning outcomes
After attending the teaching workshop students should be able to read and translate simple texts from Classical Armenian to Italian. For this aim students must be able to recognize and analyze the inflected forms of nouns, pronouns and verbs and use correctly the dictionaries of Classical Armenian.

Context: history, geography, language, and culture;
main learning tools for Classical Armenian;
alphabet (reading, writing, transliteration systems) and phonological system;
vowel alternations;
noun and pronoun inflection;
article;
main prepositions;
verb inflection (present and imperfect indicative; infinite);
negation;
practical exercises: morphological analysis; translation of sentences and simple texts.

None.

Direct instruction; interactive lecture; individual and group exercises.

Teaching materials will be provided by the instructor and/or made available on MyAriel (https://ariel.unimi.it/). Suggestions for further reading will be given in class whenever applicable.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Students will be expected to attend class regularly, actively engage with the instructor and with fellow learners, and complete assignments in a timely fashion. A pass/fail grading system will be implemented.
