Teaching Workshop: from Websites to Accessible Resources

Learning objectives
The workshop explores the key elements of creating, designing, and evaluating the accessibility of digital documents. Starting with the principles of accessibility and various web standards. Sessions will focus on ways to assess accessibility and create accessible documents with commonly used software.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the workshop, students will be able to define the general principles of accessibility and learn about the web accessibility standards WCAG. They will also be able to analyze the accessibility features of programs for creating digital resources and structure documents that meet basic accessibility criteria. Finally, they will be able to verify the accessibility of existing digital documents.

LESSON 01
Stakeholders in accessibility, accessibility by design, and digital accessibility: we will work on defining user personas and exploring visible and invisible barriers in the use of a website.
LESSON 02
Website accessibility analysis: we will explore the POUR principles and the WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 criteria through the analysis of selected websites. The activity includes a structured review of several websites using evaluation grids and a discussion of the identified elements, with the aim of connecting them to accessibility criteria. We will also test some free tools for website accessibility analysis.
LESSON 03
Website accessibility sprint: the session will be dedicated to the development of the first individual project, including the identification of a website to be analyzed, the definition of user personas, and the assessment of accessibility criteria.
LESSON 04
Accessible documents: through tutorials, practical cases, and individual exercises, we will explore the accessibility features of Word and PowerPoint. We will analyze the main accessibility standards for digital documents.
LESSON 05
Digital materials accessibility sprint: the session will be dedicated to the second individual project, which involves creating a set of accessible materials, specifying their usage scenario and key characteristics. The project also includes validation using accessibility checking tools.

Prerequisites for admission
Basic IT skills (web browsing, Office 365)
Teaching methods
The course adopts active and participatory teaching methods. Activities are based on guided practical exercises, carried out individually or in groups. The analysis of real-world cases and the use of scenarios support the development of critical skills, while individual and group work conducted online in synchronous mode fosters collaboration.

Assessment methods and Criteria
To successfully complete the course, students must submit the assignments resulting from group discussions, as well as two individual projects: one focused on the analysis of a website and the other on the creation and analysis of a document in accordance with accessibility criteria.
