Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with the methodological knowledge required for the analysis of audiovisual and literary texts from a translation studies perspective, in line with the framework of PETRA-E (Framework of Reference for the Education and Training of Literary Translators). In particular, the course aims to develop textual and linguistic competences, cultural competences, translational and strategic competences, and professional competences. Students will therefore be provided with the tools to analyse a text from a linguistic, sociolinguistic, stylistic, and rhetorical perspective, taking into account the socio-historical and cultural context in which it was produced, as well as its authorial and linguistic specificities, thus fostering the development of textual analysis and critical interpretation skills. The course also aims to enhance students' awareness in the field of translation by addressing the issue of rendering the selected passages into Italian from a functional and professional perspective, one that takes into consideration the interdependence between client, translator, and model reader/viewer, in line with an ethical, project-oriented, and professional approach.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be familiar with the main theories that have shaped, and continue to shape, the international landscape of Translation Studies. Particular attention will be devoted to recent developments in Audiovisual Translation Studies, as well as to the theoretical paradigms that have influenced contemporary thought from the 1950s to the present day, with specific reference to the perspective of Translation Studies in the field of literary translation. Students will be able to identify the specific features of both audiovisual and literary texts. They will also be able to apply a range of translation techniques in order to address deforming tendencies, as well as the processes of manipulation and rewriting to which a translated text may be subject.
