Ancient Greek Language

The course aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of Ancient Greek and its literary dialects, considered in their historical development and in relation to the various genres of Greek literature, while equipping them with the methodological tools necessary for the linguistic, stylistic, and rhetorical analysis of Greek texts.

Knowledge: Upon successfully completing the course, students should have acquired the linguistic and methodological knowledge required for university-level study of Ancient Greek. In particular, they should demonstrate a solid understanding of the main linguistic features of the texts studied and of their stylistic and rhetorical characteristics.

Skills: Students should be able to translate and interpret the Greek texts studied, justifying their translation choices in a conscious and critically informed manner. They should also be able to situate texts independently within their historical and literary contexts, recognising their generic features and their connections with other genres of Greek literature. In addition, they should demonstrate the ability to make appropriate use of the main bibliographical resources and research tools employed in the study of Ancient Greek language and literature.
