Learning objectives
The course aims for the acquisition of in-depth, autonomous analysis skills of Ancient Greek texts, from a linguistic stylistic and rhetorical point of view. Particular attention will be paid to their originality, their historical and poetic or prosaic context and to the theory of literary genres.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: students are expected to acquire a thorough knowledge of Ancient Greek, its historical developments as well as its dialectal peculiarities, building upon the knowledge acquired during the B.A. program and referring to up-to-date scholarly literature.

Skills: students are expected to develop autonomous research skills as a preparatory work to the M.A. thesis, based on linguistic fluency and knowledge of the vocabulary of the discipline.

The Language of Self-Address: Modes and Forms of Monologue from Homer to the Hellenistic Age

Part I (20 hours, 3 ECTS credits): Archaic Foundations
Part II (20 hours, 3 ECTS credits): Classical and Hellenistic Developments

The syllabus for non-attending students is the same as that for attending students. Detailed information on the course contents and examination programme will be made available on the course's Ariel website at the end of the teaching period. In addition, non-attending students will be required to undertake further readings of texts in the original language and/or specialized scholarly studies, to be agreed upon with the professor.
International and incoming Erasmus students are encouraged to contact the course lecturer at an early stage.

Examination arrangements for students with disabilities and/or specific learning disorders (SLDs) should be agreed with the course lecturer in consultation with the relevant University Office.
Prerequisites for admission
The course is intended for MA students who already possess a solid knowledge of the ancient Greek language, the history of Greek literature, classical philology, and historical linguistics.
Teaching methods
Teaching combines lectures with active student participation. The course's Ariel website will be used extensively to support teaching and learning activities. Regular class attendance is strongly recommended.

Please note that one of the learning objectives of this course is to familiarize students with specialized scholarly bibliography and with its effective use in research. During the course, the brief bibliographical references provided below will be supplemented and expanded through further indications and recommendations for additional reading relevant to the examination.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Assessment consists of an oral examination, which includes the translation of a short passage from Ancient Greek without prior preparation.
The examination is graded on a thirty-point scale.
