Course Description
The course focuses primarily on twentieth-century history and on the continuities and ruptures that characterized the "short twentieth century" in relation to the nineteenth century. Particular attention is devoted to the watershed represented by the First World War and to the profound changes it brought about in global society, including the shift toward the political right in many European and non-European countries.
The course then examines the emergence of the United States as a central global power, the worldwide repercussions of the 1929 economic crisis, and the rise of the Soviet bloc as a political, economic, and ideological alternative to the capitalist West.
The final module is devoted to the 1960s and 1970s.
The course concludes with the Arab Spring uprisings of 2011 and a brief discussion of the global balance of power in the following period. Throughout the course, particular attention will be paid to Italian politics within its international context.
