Data Governance and Data Protection: Technical and Legal Perspectives
A.Y. 2026/2027
Learning objectives
The objective of this course is to introduce issues related with privacy and data protection, from both a technical and from a legal point of view. The course will study privacy risks arising in personal data processing and publishing, as well as the problem of protecting data in emerging scenarios (e.g., AI systems), where data might be stored, managed, and elaborated by third parties, and will illustrate technical solutions aimed at mitigating these risks. The course will introduce the essential elements of cybersecurity and technical and organizational measures in the light of artificial intelligence, data protection and cybersecurity regulations in EU and in Italy.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will have knowledge and understanding of privacy risks in collecting and processing data and of the fundamental legal principles concerning cybersecurity and protection of personal data from different perspectives. The student will have autonomous ability to read the new European standards on artificial intelligence, data protection and platforms regulations, to understand the goals and technological motivations that led to their adoption, and to understand the implementation rationale of the new regulatory framework. The student will be able to identify privacy risks in data publication and in outsourcing scenarios, and to propose solutions able to mitigate such risks, assessing the level of persisting risks that cannot be eliminated.
