Diagnostic Techniques in Cytopathology and Histopathology
A.Y. 2026/2027
Learning objectives
The course aims to lead the students to:
1. Know the bases of cyto and histopathological techniques and of molecular pathology
2. Know the description, indications, advantages and limitations of cytological, histological and ancillary techniques (i.e. immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, molecular biology)
3. Distinguish morphological patterns of normality and abnormality under the microscope for the main cytological and histological samples
4. Know how to appropriately manage samples accepted in the division of pathology and allocate them to a correct workflow
5. know how to use public databases to optimize histological and molecular pathology tests
6. mention experimental research approaches in the field of pathology anatomy

Expected learning outcomes
The student will have an in-depth knowledge of the main cyto-histopathological and molecular diagnostic techniques and ancillary techniques; he will also know the pathological classification of the main organs / systems in which techniques are useful. This knowledge will help the student to be oriented during the activity in a Pathology lab by applying the various diagnostic techniques with critical ability. The student will know the cytological and molecular techniques to be applied to different types of samples; will be able to recognize morphological and molecular patterns of normality and differentiate them from pathological ones. This knowledge will allow him to better evaluate his work.
