Learning objectives
The European Union Law course pursues the following learning objectives:
1. To provide students with a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of the European Union legal order, as well as the ability to comprehend the process of European integration and the rules and principles governing the relationship between European Union law and national law, with reference to the Italian legal system.
2. To develop students' ability to critically analyze and interpret legal principles and rules. Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to apply the legal concepts acquired to practical cases through the study of official European Union documents, and particularly the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
3. To enable students to develop independent critical judgment by formulating legally sound arguments about the topics covered in the course.
4. To promote the acquisition of specialized legal terminology. Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to communicate their knowledge accurately, coherently, and using appropriate legal language.
5. To strengthen students' capacity for autonomous learning so that, once they have acquired the fundamental legal tools, they are able to keep their knowledge of European Union law up to date by applying the relevant legislative and judicial framework, including within the national legal context.
6. To provide students with interdisciplinary knowledge and skills that will support their preparation for subsequent courses and examinations within the degree programme.
7. To encourage students' interest in the elective courses offered within the relevant subject area.
8. To equip students with the knowledge required for the principal professional and career opportunities associated with the degree programme, for which a sound understanding of European Union law constitutes an essential prerequisite.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will have acquired: (i) a sound knowledge and understanding of the process of European integration and of the rules and principles governing the relationship between European Union law and national law, with particular reference to the Italian legal system; (ii) the ability to critically analyse and process the knowledge acquired, as well as to apply it to practical cases; (iii) the ability to interpret the legal rules examined during the course and to develop well-reasoned and legally sound arguments with regard to the topics discussed; (iv) a command of the legal terminology specific to the field of European Union law; (v) the skills and tools necessary to keep their knowledge of European Union law up to date through independent study.
