The course also aims to provide the principles of genetic improvement with particular reference to livestock, both at the population and herd level. Furthermore, the students will be provided with the tools needed for the selection of reproducers according to specific selection objectives.
Expected learning outcomes
1. Knowledge and understanding: At the end of the course, students will have acquired knowledge of the principles and methodologies of genetic selection for the genetic improvement of the main livestock species.
2. Applying knowledge and understanding: Students will be able to apply the principles of genetic selection and breeding programmes to simple simulated case studies related to livestock improvement.
3. Making judgements: Students will be able to critically evaluate and discuss the information acquired, drawing appropriate conclusions. Practical exercises are specifically designed to develop these critical thinking skills.
4. Communication skills: Students will be able to communicate the concepts learned using appropriate scientific and technical terminology, particularly with reference to the livestock production systems covered in the course.
5. Learning skills: Students will develop the ability to independently expand their knowledge by using appropriate information sources to interpret technological and productive innovations in animal breeding and genetics.
