ARCHIVES, SOURCES, AND GENDER IN BOOK AND PUBLISHING STUDIES
MODULE A - Book History and the Archival Turn: Sources for the History of Contemporary Publishing
The first module introduces the historiographical debates that have shaped book history from the 1980s to the present, with particular emphasis on the archival turn. Special attention is devoted to documentary sources for the history of contemporary publishing and to the methodological issues involved in their interpretation.
MODULE B - The Other Half of Publishing: Women in the Book Trades
Building on an overview of the different types of cultural archives, the second module examines the history of women's professional roles in the book trades. It also explores the potential of investigating new archival sources and of asking new questions of more traditional sources in order to reassess women's contribution to the publishing world.
MODULE C - Writing, Publishing, and Reading Today: Major Technological, Social, and Cultural Transformations
The third module is organized as a seminar and focuses on current issues and challenges facing the publishing industry. Through a selection of topics, students engage—where possible—in direct analysis of primary sources and discussions with practitioners. Active participation is expected from students taking the 9 ECTS version of the course.

In the first lessons, basic notions of book history will be taught, as an introduction to the chronology and terminology of the field. However, for those who have never studied Bibliography nor History of printing and publishing, it might be useful to read Lodovica Braida, Stampa e cultura in Europa tra XV e XVI secolo (Roma-Bari, Laterza, 2000 or later editions) and Alberto Cadioli, Giuliano Vigini, Storia dell'editoria in Italia. Dall'Unità a oggi (Milan, Bibliografica, 2018).
Teaching methods
Class attendance is recommended, although not compulsory. The teaching consists of lectures to convey knowledge, skills and language specific to the discipline. Classroom discussion is an essential part of the didactic methodology and aims at fostering a critical spirit and the ability to apply skills and knowledge. In addition to lectures, group work and/or individual reports, participation in conferences and seminars, and visits to archives and libraries are planned.
