Course syllabus and organization

Single session

Course syllabus
MODULE 1 - BIBLIOGRAPHIC RESEARCH
Bibliographic Research Laboratory syllabus:
Resources for health-related research in the University Digital Library.
Methodological foundations of bibliographic research.
PubMed: database structure, search tools, retrieval of results.
Embase: database structure, search tools, retrieval of results.
Overview of other databases and online resources for health-related research.

MODULE 2 - EXCEL
The course syllabus is organised as follows.
Lesson 1: "Designing a questionnaire for data collection"
Formulating a research question; identifying endpoints, outcomes, and independent variables; creating the questionnaire in Microsoft Forms; administering it to the target population.
Lesson 2: "Guide to data analysis in Excel"
Constructing frequency tables and graphs for qualitative nominal and ordinal variables; constructing frequency tables and graphs for discrete and continuous quantitative variables; measures of central tendency and dispersion; tests on means and tests on proportions; correlation; introduction to linear regression.
Group work:
Selection of the topic to be explored by each group; translation of the objectives into a questionnaire; sending the questionnaire to the target population; analysis of the results and further exploration/tutoring in Excel; presentation and export of the results; organisation of the presentation; final presentation.

MODULE 3 - EDUCATIONAL LABORATORY
The educational-training pathway aims to provide advanced cultural and professional training so as to enable competent intervention in teaching and training processes in areas relevant to the different healthcare profiles included in the Rehabilitation Class. The laboratory activity includes a training pathway designed to prepare the student to deliver an in-class lesson in university programmes of first and second level, or in complementary programmes (Master's programmes).
Prerequisites for admission
For the Bibliographic Research and Excel workshop modules, basic knowledge of the Office package and the ability to navigate the web are required.
For the Teaching workshop, attendance and/or inclusion in the study plan of the course Design and Management of Training Processes is recommended.
Teaching methods
MODULE 1 - BIBLIOGRAPHIC RESEARCH
The course will be delivered in a blended format, through asynchronous lessons on the Moodle platform and guided in-class exercises, and is based on active teaching methods such as individual or small-group exercises on assigned topics, which will help students develop practical skills. Individual exercises will include a collective correction session in class, while group work will conclude with a presentation to the class.
Within the "Bibliographic Research Workshop" section on MyAriel, students will find the slides supporting the lessons and additional in-depth materials, intended to facilitate independent study.

MODULE 2 - EXCEL
Students will be divided into four working groups, extendable to five, so that no group exceeds seven members. During the laboratory activity, each group will design a questionnaire to answer a research question of their choice, then develop it in Microsoft Forms and administer it to the target population, ending with the analysis of the resulting data in Microsoft Excel. In addition, a guided exercise in Excel will be carried out in class, including the statistical analysis of a dataset derived from a questionnaire administered by the lecturers to the students themselves.
The course is delivered through in-person lectures in a computer lab, where the necessary software is already installed, so there is no need to bring a personal laptop. To carry out exercises outside the classroom, students can use Microsoft Excel free of charge through Office 365 Education by accessing office.com via browser with their University credentials (@unimi.it, @studenti.unimi.it).
In the academic Microsoft Teams space for the laboratory, to which students will be added before the course begins, the following will be available: (i) group-specific channels, where students can interact with one another for analysis and study; (ii) the channel containing teaching materials, namely the PDF slides and the test dataset; and (iii) the Q&A channel for interaction with the lecturers.
The final presentation will be delivered in Microsoft PowerPoint or similar software, with the results exported from Microsoft Excel. A theoretical review of the basic concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics will also be possible.

MODULE 3 - PEDAGOGICAL WORKSHOP
The proposal for the laboratory activity (lesson) is put forward by the student and submitted for approval by the Faculty Coordinator, in accordance with the Interministerial Decree of February 2009. The laboratory activity carried out by the student is assessed by the tutor through a questionnaire; the lesson is also assessed by the student learners through a questionnaire. The lesson is conducted at affiliated sites under the guidance of a tutor.
Teaching Resources
MODULE 1 - BIBLIOGRAPHIC RESEARCH
No textbooks are required. The teaching materials for the bibliographic research laboratory (mainly in video format) are available on Moodle.

MODULE 2 - EXCEL
The teaching materials will be provided by the lecturers and made available on the Microsoft Teams platform.

MODULE 3 - EDUCATIONAL LABORATORY
Reference materials and bibliography are specific to the topic of the lesson.
Assessment methods and Criteria
MODULE 1 - BIBLIOGRAPHIC RESEARCH
For the Bibliographic Research workshop, the assessment of learning outcomes takes place through two tests:
- an oral presentation of the methodological steps for carrying out a bibliographic search as group work on a specific topic assigned by the lecturers; this test is not assessed;
- a written test consisting of an individual bibliographic search; the test is assessed on a pass/fail basis. Failure to pass the written test entails the obligation to repeat the workshop in the following year.

MODULE 2 - EXCEL
The final assessment will take place through a presentation of the group work, lasting a maximum of 30 minutes. This assessment will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis by the lecturers in charge of the course.
The presentation must be structured as follows:
- Brief introduction (theoretical problem, objectives, and measurement of the objective).
- Presentation of the questionnaire (structure, measured variables, and outcome variable).
- Descriptive analysis of the results, presenting the answers in graphical and tabular form.
- Inferential analysis of the outcome in relation to the measured variables (at least one hypothesis test).
- Discussion of the results in relation to the objective and initial hypotheses.
The presentation of the results by each member of the group is a necessary condition for passing the assessment.
MODULE 3 - PEDAGOGICAL WORKSHOP
The final assessment consists of delivering the lesson in class and being evaluated both by the students and by the supervising tutor.
- University credits: 5
Laboratories: 75 hours
