Media Theory and Analysis

Learning objectives
The first part of the course introduces students to a variety of theoretical and historiographical issues related to the media, particularly audiovisual media. The second part of the course provides students with the tools necessary to analyse film and television texts. In the final part, students will be presented with a specific area of analysis to apply in a final practical assignment.
Expected learning outcomes
The course aims to provide students with the tools necessary to understand how audiovisual media function and the main theoretical issues they raise. It will also equip students with methodologies for analysing audiovisual texts. By the end of the course, students should be able to analyse a film or television programme by linking its textual aspects to contextual dimensions, particularly with reference to industrial and cultural issues.
