Learning objectives
- Acquire knowledge of the fundamental principles of general pathology and general pathophysiology.
- Develop the ability to analyze the causes (etiology) and mechanisms (pathogenesis) underlying the onset and progression of disease.
- Gain an understanding of diagnostic-clinical pathology and laboratory methodologies in cytology, cytopathology, immunohematology, and genetic pathology.
- Understand the laboratory diagnostic approaches to major pathological conditions and their associated biomarkers.
- Acquire knowledge of the diagnostic-clinical aspects of reproductive medicine.
- Understand the principles of general pharmacology, including pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics.
- Develop knowledge of major drug interactions, as well as the principles of pharmacogenetics and pharmacovigilance.
Expected learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the necessary knowledge for understanding the causes of human diseases and the fundamental pathogenetic mechanisms at the cell and tissue levels. At the end of the course the students will have a good knowledge of etiology and pathogenesis with particular reference to the main genetic diseases, the various forms of the inflammatory process, the damage, the main alterations of the immune system, and the tumors.
The course gives the knowledge of clinical biomarkers use in clinical practice. The students will have the acquaintance of the main biomarkers currently approved in Laboratory Medicine to discriminate the health state than a pathological status and its development. The students will also have learned the main diagnostic tools and clinical exams used to identify the health state from prenatal phase to the childhood.
Students will be able to understand the fundamental principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, applying them to the evaluation of drug efficacy and safety. In addition, they will acquire competencies in pharmacological interactions, pharmacogenetics, and pharmacovigilance tools, which are essential for safe and evidence-based clinical practice.
