Learning objectives
The course is divided into three modules. The first module, Physiology and Ethology of Domestic Animals (6 CFU), provides students with a comprehensive overview of cellular function physiology, the nervous system and sensory organs, the blood and cardiovascular system, and the skeletal and smooth muscle cells in domestic mammals, fish, and birds. The second module, Veterinary ethology and Animal welfare (4 CFU), provides students with fundamental knowledge of general ethology and the ethology of selected species of veterinary interest including domestic animals and non-conventional companion animals (NCCAs), with particular emphasis on its application to the assessment and promotion of animal welfare. The third module, Veterinary Law (2 CFU), aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of national and European law relevant to the veterinary profession. Particular attention will be devoted to the structure and functioning of the judicial system, the relationship between veterinarians and judicial authorities, as well as the legal framework governing animal protection and welfare and the main criminal offences against animals
Expected learning outcomes
1) Knowledge and Understanding: for the physiology module, students should be able to explain the basic physiological functions related to the nervous system, including neuron physiology, the spinal cord, brain (particularly the cerebellum and motor functions), and sensory organs. They should also be able to describe the basic functions of the cardiovascular system, including cardiac physiology (electrocardiography and mechanical cardiac activity with nervous control) and circulatory physiology (relationship between pressure, flow, and resistance across all circulatory districts and nervous regulation of pressure), highlighting differences among domestic mammals, birds, and fish. Additionally, students should understand the physiological bases of skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle contraction in domestic mammals, fish, and birds. For the Ethology module, students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the physiological bases of animal behavior, with particular emphasis on the underlying mechanisms, behavioral development, and major social, sexual, and parental behavior patterns. Students will also be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the scientific methods used to study and assess animal behavior, as well as the principles underlying the collection and interpretation of behavioral data. For the Veterinary law module, students should acquire the fundamental principles of law and the main legal provisions relevant to the veterinary profession, with particular reference to the relationship between veterinarians and the judicial authority, animal protection and welfare and the principal criminal offences against animals.
2) Applying Knowledge and Understanding: students must demonstrate the ability to connect various topics, such as the functions of the nervous system, particularly the hypothalamus, and different animal behaviors, such as feeding behavior or responses to temperature changes. This will enable them to adequately address subsequent studies in pathology and veterinary clinic. Students will be expected to demonstrate a sound understanding of the fundamental ethological concepts required to identify the factors influencing animal welfare and to critically interpret welfare-related issues, thereby providing a foundation for the advanced and applied training they will receive in subsequent courses throughout the veterinary curriculum. They must also develop the ability to identify, critically analyze and interpret legal sources and case law relevant to the veterinary profession, and to apply their fundamental principles in the assessment of practical cases, including those involving interactions with the judicial authority, preparing them for further study and understanding of veterinary legal medicine and legislation. These skills will facilitate further study in the field of forensic medicine and veterinary legislation.
3) Critical Thinking and Judgment: the student will be expected to approach the study of the subject matter critically. This will include demonstrating the ability to orally present written reports during practical activities, integrating the study materials provided by the professor of physiology with independently acquired knowledge. In addition, students will be expected to present, in a rigorous manner and using appropriate scientific language, an ethological study independently designed and conducted as part of a group project, describing its rationale and methodology and critically discussing its results, limitations, and potential future directions. The student will also develop the ability to critically address legal issues related to the veterinary profession by identifying and interpreting the relevant legal framework across different areas of professional practice, assessing its practical implications and recognizing the professional and legal responsibilities arising from its application.
4) Communication: students will be expected to demonstrate ability to use appropriate scientific terminology and to communicate acquired knowledge clearly, accurately, and effectively. This ability will be assessed through responses to open-ended examination questions, oral presentations of reports and assignments prepared during the course, and the presentation of scientific studies and data in accordance with accepted standards of academic communication. Students will also be expected to actively participate in classroom discussions, critically and thoughtfully evaluating the cases and topics presented by the instructors.
5) Life-long Learning Skills: students will be expected to demonstrate the ability to independently expand and update their knowledge of topics related to physiology, ethology, animal welfare, and veterinary law through the identification, critical evaluation and integration of relevant scientific, legal and judicial sources. They will also be expected to apply the knowledge and methodologies acquired during the course to independently address new scientific and professional questions and challenges

Prerequisites for admission
The prerequisites required to pass the exam are the knowledge of the anatomy of the nervous, cardiocirculatory and skeletal muscular systems, as well as the basics of biochemistry. It is also necessary to have passed the preliminary examinations of:
1) Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and 2) Systematic and Comparative Veterinary Anatomy.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of three written tests: one for physiology, one for ethology, and one for veterinary law.
The physiology test is divided into two sections: 1) 20 multiple-choice questions each with 4 answer options. Each correct option is worth 0.25 points, up to a maximum of 1 point per question. Questions may have more than one correct answer. Wrong answers or no answers are not penalised. 2) 2 open-ended questions. Each can receive a score from 0 to 5 points, based on the completeness of the answer (0-2 points), the accuracy of the content (0-2 points), and the appropriate use of scientific language (1 point). The final exam score will be the sum of the points obtained in both sections. The ethology test consists of 15 multiple-choice questions, each with four possible answers, only one of which is correct. Each correct answer is worth 2 points, except for one question, which is worth 3 points. Incorrect or unanswered questions do not receive any points. The maximum score for this test is 31 points.
The Veterinary Law test consists of 8 multiple-choice questions, each with four possible answers, only one of which is correct; two of the questions are followed by an open-ended in-depth question. Each correct answer is worth 3.25 points. Each answer to the in-depth questions is worth between 0 and 2 points, depending on the accuracy and clarity of the answer. Wrong answers or no answers are not penalised. The maximum score for this test is 30 points. All three tests are conducted at the same time. The final exam grade is calculated as a weighted average of the scores obtained in each module. Additionally, up to one extra point may be awarded based on the evaluation of presentations submitted during practical exercises.

Selection of a scientific paper to be critically analyzed by subgroups of up to 3 students each. Subsequently, 9 hours with all students present: presentation and analysis of the scientific paper selected by student subgroups, focusing on the physiology of domestic or non-conventional animals.
2) Exercises in physioethology lab:
4 hours for 4 groups of 25 students each: correct approach to dogs and measurement of main physiological parameters, e.g., heart rate, heart sounds, and nervous reflexes (e.g., palpebral and miotic reflexes; patellar reflex). Non-invasive collection of biological samples.
3) Laboratory or field practical session:
1 hour for 4 groups of 25 students each: demonstration of how to correctly perform an ECG.

Frontal lessons (5 CFU, equivalent to 40 hours, Cat. A) through projection of slides with diagrams, figures, text and explanatory videos. At the end of each lesson, IT tools (Wooclap) are used to verify the understanding of the topics covered, also allowing students to formulate questions anonymously.
The practicals (1 CFU, equivalent to 16 hours per student) take place partly in the classroom, partly in lab and partly in the field.

Lifelong learning skills: students will be expected to demonstrate the ability to independently expand and update their knowledge of ethology and animal welfare through the identification, critical evaluation, and integration of relevant scientific literature. They will also be expected to apply the knowledge and methodologies acquired during the course to independently address new scientific and professional questions and challenges.
Day One Competences 2026: 2, 6, and 9. These DOCs will be assigned as part of the practical activity involving the design and preparation of the ethological study. Students may request validation within 72 hours following completion of the activity (project presentation).
Teaching methods
The lectures (3 CFU equivalent to 24 hours, Cat. A) are delivered using slides that include diagrams, images, text, and explanatory videos. Digital tools such as Wooclap and/or Google Forms are used to promote learning, assess learning progress, encourage interactivity, and gather feedback from students.
The practicals (1 CFU, equivalent to 16 hours per student) are conducted partly in the classroom, and partly in the field and/or laboratory.
1) Classroom practicals (Cat. C):
N. 5 hours in the presence of all students.
2) Laboratory/field practicals (Cat. E):
N. 8 hours delivered to 4 groups of 25 students each in the laboratory.
N. 3 hours in the presence of all students in the field.

Introduction to Law: Overview of the legal system and the sources of national and European law (2 hours)

No. 4 hours (4 groups of 25 students): introduction to legal and case law research, using the main online databases available; analysis of a case study involving the identification of applicable regulations, discussion and problem-solving activities.
No. 12 hours in plenary sessions: Analysis and critical discussion of case law relevant to the veterinary profession, examined in the light of the applicable legislation, with the active involvement of all students.

Learning Outcomes
1. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students should have acquired a sound understanding of the fundamentals of national and European law. This should include knowledge of the relationship between veterinarians and the judicial authorities, the main offences against animals and the legislation concerning animal protection and welfare.
2. Applying Knowledge and Understanding
Students must demonstrate their ability to research, critically analyse and interpret relevant legislation and case law in this field. Furthermore, they should be able to navigate the main legal issues related to the veterinary profession, developing skills that will support further study in veterinary forensic medicine and veterinary legislation.
3. Critical thinking and judgment
Students must develop a critical approach to the study of veterinary law. They should be able to identify relevant regulations for professional practice in various areas of interest, evaluate them, and apply them correctly. They must also recognise and analyse the responsibilities associated with the veterinary profession.
4. Communication Skills
Students must demonstrate an ability to use appropriate legal terminology to express their knowledge clearly and correctly, as well as demonstrate communication skills through active participation in classroom discussions and arguments based on cases presented by the lecturer.
5. Learning Skills
Students must demonstrate their ability to deepen their knowledge of veterinary law independently, by consulting and navigating the main legal, judicial and scientific sources relevant to veterinary law.
