Plant Pathology

The main objective of the course is to provide students with fundamental knowledge of etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of plant diseases caused by both biotic agents and abiotic factors. The course examines the biology of the major plant pathogens, their interactions with host plants and the environment, and introduces the main strategies for disease prevention, control, and management within the frameworks of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and organic farming.

Knowledge and understanding. Students will acquire knowledge of the biology of plant pathogens (viruses, bacteria, oomycetes, and fungi) and their interactions with host plants and the environment. They will develop the ability to recognize the major plant diseases caused by both biotic agents and abiotic factors and to identify appropriate prevention, control, and management strategies that safeguard both human health and the environment.
Applying knowledge and understanding. Students will be able to identify the type of stress (biotic or abiotic) affecting a plant, assess its qualitative and quantitative impact on crop production, and implement appropriate preventive and control measures.
Making judgements. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills required to independently recognize the main phytopathological problems affecting cultivated plants and to identify the most appropriate disease management and control strategies for sustainable agricultural systems.
Communication skills. Students will develop the ability to communicate information on plant diseases and their prevention and control strategies using appropriate scientific and technical terminology.
Learning skills. Students will develop the ability to independently collect, organize, study, and critically process the information required to address problems related to plant disease diagnosis and management. These learning skills will be fostered through lectures, laboratory activities, field visits, and class discussions. Learning outcomes will be assessed through individual presentations and/or group work, as well as the final examination.
