Teaching French as a Foreign Language

Learning objectives
The course offers, firstly, a disciplinary framework for the teaching of foreign languages with particular reference to the teaching of French as a foreign language and, secondly, a framework for the teaching methods that have followed one another since the middle of the last century until today. The study will focus on the theoretical characteristics that a teacher must take into account in his choices and on the didactic applications according to some guidelines: what is the 'language', how to learn it, how to teach it and with which materials. Teaching is in fact a constant decision-making process: the teacher chooses continuously at the level of method, objectives, activities and procedures according to his beliefs, the indications of the programs and practical considerations.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: the student becomes aware of the European reference documents and the succession of methods and materials for teaching the français langue étrangère over time. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the student learns in this first approach to teaching French to make informed choices in planning, teaching and assessing a foreign language through the example of French as a foreign language.

Course syllabus
The course is entitled Translation between Italian and French: principles and practice and consists of the following three teaching units:
A: History and theory of translation. (20 hours, 3 CFU);
B: Translation of structural and contrastive elements. (20 hours, 3 CFU);
C: Translating authors XVII-XX century. (20 hours, 3 CFU).
Students intending to acquire 6 CFU will stick to the syllabus of units A and C; all students intending to acquire 9 CFU will stick to the complete syllabus (units A, B and C).
The three units (A, B and C) will be covered in the second semester.
Units A and B aim to initiate a reflection on translanguaging studies, particularly concerning literary translation. In this phase, the linguistic code will also be reflected upon from a translation and contrastive perspective.
Unit C will deal with some literary texts translation.
The course program is accepted until February 2029. Since the summer session of 2029, students will have to study the 2027-28 course program exclusively.

Prerequisites for admission
The course, taught in French and Italian, the course materials and the bibliography require a good competence both in French and Italian.
Teaching methods
The course employs the following teaching methods: lectures, translation assignments, group reading and analysis of source and target texts.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam is made up of a preliminary translation test and of an oral test. The written test consists of the translation of a literary passage of about 3000 characters. The time allowed is 4 hours. Students can use their paper dictionaries - both bilingual and monolingual (not their laptop. The oral test includes open questions and a critical discussion and analysis of the student's translation. bibliography.
The written test aims at verifying the students' comprehension of French literary texts, as well as the lexical, terminological and rhetorical accuracy of their translations into Italian, and their rendering of the syntactic structure and cultural aspects of the source text. The mark is expressed in thirtieths.
The oral test is meant to verify the candidate's ability to contextualize authors and works, their terminological accuracy and their critical thinking about the topics addressed in the course. The final mark is expressed in thirtieths, and students are free to reject it during the exam.
