Learning objectives
Aim of the course is to provide basic and applied knowledge of the most updated techniques used in biomedical research. The course will be characterized by a multidisciplinary approach in order to provide a range of up-to-date and timely information on new technological developments, useful to professional application and research activity.
Expected learning outcomes
In the last years the biomedical research has faced an impressive advancement of the methodological tools. This course intends to expose the students to a large number of these techniques so to build a solid knowledge of the most novel methodological information. The students will benefit from this course since they will acquire the competence to identify the most appropriate and powerful techniques to use for their research purposes.

Course syllabus
The course is characterized by thematic issues discussed in the classroom or, when necessary, directly in the laboratories. The following is a list of the techniques that will be presented:
-Cloning techniques, genetic manipulation, and heterologous expression;
-CRISPR-CAS9;
-Stem cells: an experimental model to unravel pathophysiological mechanisms as well as element for tissue regeneration;
-Methods used in the study of the processes associated with angiogenesis;
-Electrophysiological techniques (patch-clamp) on single cells;
-Telemetric measurements of cardiac activity (ECG) in freely-moving animals;
-Complementary experimental methodologies to study 2D cardiomyocytes and/or neuronal cultures;
-Analytical techniques for proteomic studies;
-Analytical techniques for metabolomic studies;
-Model organisms such as zebrafish and fruit fly;
-Nanotechnologies;
-Techniques for advanced functional microscopy, confocal microscopy, electronic microscopy;
- Flow cytometry and Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS);
-Next Generation Sequencing and identification of mutations associated with pathologies.
Prerequisites for admission
Students must know basic concepts of general physiology and biochemistry.
Teaching methods
Teaching will be based on interactive frontal lectures supported by projected slides. Students will be actively involved into discussions to elaborate the topics covered during the lectures with a critical point of view, in order to improve their independent thinking and communication skills.
Attendance to the course is strongly recommended.
Teaching Resources
The course is entirely based on bibliographic material. Lecture slides, scientific research articles and reviews regarding each lecture topic (uploaded on myARIEL).
Assessment methods and Criteria
The final exam consists of a written essay composed of 2 open questions on the topics covered during the course (max 30/30). The mark for each answer will be a maximum of 30 and the average will provide the final mark.
The evaluation takes into account the ability of the student to handle the topics covered by the course and to use proper scientific communication skills.
The exam result will be communicated by e-mail.
