Theories of the Image

Students will gain in-depth knowledge and expertise in the main image theories, also considering interdisciplinary connections with semiotics, art history, media history and theory, psychology, anthropology, cognitive neurosciences.

Students will acquire the ability to:
- critically analyse the main image theories in the context of Western cultural tradition, with a particular focus on the contemporary debate;
- critically confront with major authors and concepts in image theories; understand their specific methods and terminology;
- reflect on the complex relationship between image, text, conceptual elaboration and media;
- take their own position in a philosophical debate and to put forward arguments in support of it;
- communicate the results of their research effectively, also using multimedia techniques to represent information, with possible application in teaching;
- use relational, communicative and organisational skills also in highly complex contexts and in the management of group work;
- apply and transmit the skills obtained also in non-specialist contexts;
- reflect on their own skills and evaluations;
- autonomously research the sources of a debate or a school of thought in the context of image theories;
- independently investigate a philosophical position or theoretical thesis in the context of image theories.
