Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the theoretical and methodological tools necessary to approach the translation of literary texts from French into Italian, fostering a critical awareness of translation processes.
In particular, the course aims to:
- reflect on the source language (French) and the target language (Italian) from a linguistic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic perspective;
- introduce the main theoretical models of translation, with particular attention to the concept of equivalence;
- identify linguistic and cultural translation problems across different domains (ecology, material culture, social, religious, and socio-legal domains);
- develop the ability to recognize and manage phenomena such as linguistic variation, registers, wordplay, and metalanguage;
- acquire negotiation skills to manage loss and compensation in translation;
- introduce the critical use of lexicographic tools and sources.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- understand and analyze literary texts in French, identifying their linguistic, stylistic, diachronic, and cultural features from a translational perspective;
- apply key theoretical concepts of translation in a conscious and informed way in both analysis and practice;
- produce translations into Italian that are coherent, justified, and appropriate to the source text, taking into account differences between linguistic systems;
- justify their translation choices through a critical and well-argued discussion;
- effectively use dictionaries, corpora, and other sources, developing independent research strategies;
- carry out an initial critical evaluation of a translation, identifying its strengths and weaknesses.
