Translation from Spanish

The course aims to provide students with a general knowledge of the main theoretical approaches developed in translation studies and of the related methodologies and techniques applicable to the translation of written texts of different types, as well as to enable them to acquire the discipline's specific terminology.

These competences will also allow students, through direct work with a corpus of texts in Spanish to be translated into Italian, to further develop their skills in: textual analysis; identification of the main translation problems; development of translation strategies; linguistic documentation through lexicographic resources (dictionaries, corpora and databases); production of Italian versions of literary texts originally written in Spanish; and critical evaluation of the quality and characteristics of Italian translations of Spanish and Spanish-American works.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- critically reflect on the main theories in translation studies, from both a historical-cultural and a methodological perspective;
- analyse a text written in Spanish with a view to developing an appropriate translation strategy;
- make informed use of their linguistic, literary and translation-studies competences in order to produce an Italian version of a text originally written in Spanish;
- be familiar with, and be able to use, the main lexicographic tools, both printed and digital, employed professionally in the field of translation;
- justify and comment on their own translation choices, in written or oral form;
- critically examine one or more Italian translations of a literary text originally written in Spanish.
