From the Palatine to the Bosphorus: Evolution of the Roman Imperial Palace

The classes are conceived of as a continuation of the course held in 2019/2020. The development of imperial palaces and places of dwelling will be examined, in Rome, in Constantinople, and in other imperial towns. Both the archeological and the literary evidence will be taken into consideration. As for Latin literary texts, two topics will be focused on primarily: the increasing, protoimperial image of Palatin as the space of power, both regal and tyrannic; literary sources relating tolate ancient imperial palaces, establishing them as both physical and intellectual spaces of power self-representation.
