The course, taught by visiting professor Franco Taroni (University of Lausanne), will examine the probabilistic model to be adopted for evaluating so-called scientific "evidence", focusing on the analysis of some problematic cases, thus seeking to raise awareness and develop a critical approach to expert conclusions. At the end of the course, students will be able to: a) understand and apply elements of probability theory and decision theory to solve problems that arise in the interpretation of scientific data in a procedural context, b) understand and explain the development of likelihood ratio formulas for evaluating forensic information from which decisions are derived, c) apply the theoretical framework to analyse and understand the issues that arise in case studies, emerging in the application of forensic science to law, and d) know and be able to apply IT tools (graphical models) useful for analysing aspects of inference and decision-making in the legal field.
Mandatory for doctoral students enrolled in the course.
