The course will focus on innovative biometric recognition approaches and systems, with particular attention to recent methods based on artificial intelligence and deep learning techniques. Artificial intelligence and deep learning approaches are capable of learning discriminative features directly from complex, multidimensional signals, thereby increasing the accuracy, adaptability, and robustness of biometric systems compared to traditional approaches. The course will present biometric systems from a technological perspective and provide an overview of recent artificial intelligence approaches, including deep learning methods, highlighting their current strengths and limitations. Specifically, the lectures will cover: 1) Introduction to biometric recognition systems; 2) Algorithmic approaches for biometric recognition based on the most widely used biometric traits (fingerprint, face, and iris); 3) Machine learning and deep learning; 4) Design of biometric systems based on machine learning and deep learning; 5) Examples of recent biometric applications based on machine learning and deep learning.
