Additional Language Skills (IPLE) - 3 credits
SLAM - University of Milan Language Centre manages the 3-credit Additional Language Skills assessment for the Bachelor's degree course in International Politics, Law and Economics (IPLE).
The required CEFR levels are the following:
- French: B1
- Spanish: B1
- German: A2
French, Spanish and German language assessments are open to first-year, second-year and third-year students.
Students who already hold a language certificate among those accepted by the University, earned for no more than 3 years at the time of submission and at a level equal to or higher than that required, can ask for validation by uploading it through the InformaStudenti platform, 'language test' category. The certificate must certify proficiency in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
Students who do not have a valid language certificate will have to sit a placement test. Test sessions are held according to the schedule published on the "Other Foreign Languages" homepage.
If a student registered for the test is unable to attend, they are required to cancel their registration or, if that is no longer possible, to inform us in advance of their absence. In case of unexpected circumstances due to medical or work-related reasons, or issues with public transportation, the student must provide a valid document (e.g., a medical certificate) to justify their absence as soon as possible.
Each student can sit the test in the chosen language only once per academic year, i.e. the test may be sat again in the following academic year.
Students who pass the test at the required level will receive the corresponding language assessment credits, according to their degree programme. Those who fail the test will have the opportunity to attend a 40-hour language course. Courses take place in the third trimester and attendance is compulsory. At the end of the course, students have to sit an end-of-course test. In order to be admitted to the end-of-course test, students must have attended at least 75% of classes. Those who do not attend the required number of classes will not be admitted to the end-of-course test, but they can sit the placement test again during the first trimester of the following academic year.

Students can register for the test through their Unimia personal account, in the section Exams and student opinion > Do you want to register or modify registration for an exam?
Students with disabilities or with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs) must contact SLAM through the InformaStudenti Service in order to receive special arrangements and support for the test (students with disabilities: 50% more extra time; students with SLDs: 30% more extra time).
The language tests last about one hour and assess grammar and vocabulary, reading comprehension and listening skills. The test includes grammar and vocabulary exercises, text comprehension tasks with the related questions and short audio clips followed by the related questions. Question formats may include multiple choice, short answers, word drag-and-drop, and true/false statements.

Registration is available online via the Exam Registration service available on Unimia as well (Exams and student opinion > Do you want to register or modify registration for an exam?); registrations open about one month prior to the test date.
BASIC level tests: dedicated to students enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree of the Humanities Faculty (Assessment of a European Union language, 3 credits) and to IPLE students - International Politics, Law and Economics, 3 credits.
