Obiettivi formativi
The aim of the course is to give the students an overview of the biotechnological approach to the diagnosis of selected clinically important disorders in small domestic animals. Emphasis will be given to the combined use of clinical, morphological and biomolecular markers for the early detection of diseases. Knowledge bridge between animal and human medicine will be underlined

STUDENTI FREQUENTANTI
Propedeuticità
General Pathology
Prerequisiti
The students have to demonstrate knowledge in the fields of veterinary anatomy, physiology and applied biochemistry acquired during their first cycle of education. The students must have developed those learning skill that are necessary to apply their knowledge and understanding within multidisciplinary contexts related to veterinary biotechnological topics.
Metodi didattici
Class lectures and computer laboratory
Module: Diagnostic workup in the clinical practice
Programma
Lectures (18h)
- Clinical features of heart disease: myocarditis and chronic heart failure in dog, hypertrophic myocardial disease in cat
- Clinical features of acute and chronic renal failure
- Clinical features of thyroid dysfunctions in dog and cat
- Diagnostic and prognostic value of biomarkers in the disease mentioned above
Metodi didattici
Class lectures
Materiale di riferimento
Power point handouts and lecture note
Module: Morphological and molecular markers of disease
Programma
Lectures (18h)
- Normal gross anatomy, microscopic structure, and embryology of organ target of the disease presented in the integrated course
- Scenario-based classes around digital images of light and electronic microscopy tissue sections to introduce students to the microscopic features of normal tissues and organs, and giving them the bases to compare and contrast the normal with the abnormal in various disease states.
- Morphological and developmental biomarkers of endocrine, cardiac and renal diseases in dog and cat
- Novel biotechnological tools in veterinary diagnostic and overview of the application of these approaches to cases presented in the clinical module
Metodi didattici
Class lectures
Materiale di riferimento
Power point hand outs and lecture notes
Module: Biochemical markers in disease diagnosis
Programma
- Methodology and instrumentation required to measure markers of disease in biological samples. Included will be discussions on principles and practice of biochemical monitoring of: myocarditis, chronic heart failure, acute or chronic renal failure, and endocrine disorders. (8h).
- Laboratory mathematics. Students will develop skills in calculations routinely used in clinical biochemistry laboratories. Examples: computer elaboration of raw data from quantitative assays of biomarkers, conversion of units of measure with reference to the International System definition of quantity, graphical representation of results (4h).
