Programma
International Political Thought will begin with a thematic introduction to the main political reflections on the state (Machiavelli, Bodin, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau).
It will then analyze the emergence of the modern state, as the sole source of political authority, the intellectual origins of the theory of sovereignty and the various conceptual and normative problems associated with sovereignty. The birth of jus gentium in the works of Grotius, Pufendorf, Burlamaqui and Emerich de Vattel will be analyzed in depth. Several lectures will explore the major alternative to the state, that is the federal American republic from the Revolution to the Civil War.
