Learning objectives
Applied Biochemistry and Movement will be planned during the 1st semester of the second year and includes two modules (Biochemistry of Exercise and Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology of Exercise). The Course will aim: to analyze the metabolism of skeletal and cardiac muscle cells during exercise, metabolic regulation and interactions among skeletal muscle and other tissues/organs; to elucidate biochemical aspects of the adaptation to physical activity; to investigate the applications related to clinical-biochemical parameters, in blood and urine, useful to monitor the health condition and adaptation to exercise; to show the mechanisms of genetic predisposition to physical activity and the methods for monitoring the molecular adaptation to exercise; to illustrate the methods for emodoping detection and biological passport.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of this course, the student will achieve deep knowledge concerning the employment of different energetic substrates by the muscle during physical activity and the metabolic regulation in skeletal muscle. Moreover, she/he will acquire the biochemical bases of adaptation to exercise. She/he will be able to choose clinical biochemical/molecular parameters more useful to monitor specific conditions associated with sport and to evaluate clinical biochemical data related to athletes; she/he will choose methods and handheld devices available for these assays; she/he will learn most recent methods for doping detection.
