Biology of Nutrition
A.Y. 2018/2019
Learning objectives
The benefits of a sound diet are most obvious both for acquiring and maintaining a health status and for training and competition performance, where nutrition strategies help athletes to perform their best by reducing or delaying the onset of factors that would otherwise cause fatigue. The aim of the course Biologia della nutrizione (MED/49) is therefore to illustrate the principles of healthy eating according to scientific documents, both national (LARN e Italian Guidelines) and international (EFSA) and for physical activity and sport. Features of the nutrients of the Mediterranean diet will be analyzed and used to formulate healthy diets. Examples of correct eating patterns for healthy adults will be presented and analyzed, together with that for the correct utilization of nutrients based on the sport classification. Benefits and harms of supplementation will be considered. Moreover, the methods for determining food requirements in the population and in the individual will be described.
The purpose of the course Analisi dei dati e modellistica predittiva (SSD MED/01) is to introduce the main concepts of statistics applied to biomedical sciences. We will cover descriptive and inferential statistics, statistical hypothesis testing for the analysis of continuous and categorical variables, correlation and regression. The usefulness of linear and nonlinear regression to provide models suited for predictive purposes will be emphasized. Throughout the course, examples of the application of statistical techniques within relevant biomedical settings will be given. The content of the course is divided into 12 lessons, two hours each. At the completion of the course, students will be more capable to interpret the results from statistical procedures used in the biomedical literature. In addition, they will have mastered the basics to select the appropriate methods to analyse the data collected during the course of their Master Thesis.
