Learning objectives
Il corso intende introdurre gli studenti ai principali strumenti e temi che caratterizzano l'odierna riflessione riguardo a questioni bioetiche che sorgono all'intersezione tra biomedicina e società. In particolare, si presterà attenzione alle controverse questioni etiche inerenti al rapporto tra ricerca scientifica e vita umana e ai temi emergenti in etica animale e ambientale. Il ciclo di lezioni prevede un'introduzione metodologica alla disciplina volta a fornire gli strumenti del corretto ragionare in ambito bioetico. L'introduzione metodologica sarà seguita da una serie di lezioni 'monografiche' volte ad approfondire un particolare aspetto (o problema) della ricerca scientifica scelto per la sua rilevanza etica, legale o regolatoria. Lo scopo principale del corso è fornire agli studenti gli strumenti necessari per sviluppare criticamente la propria posizione in merito a questioni controverse di bioetica pubblica.

Course syllabus
Legal rules, religious rules, ethical rules. The deontology. Connections between legal and deontological rules. The Codes of Ethics. Introduction to legal rules. The separation of powers. The principal levels of production of legal rules. The efficacy of legal rules in time. The most important types of sources of legal rules: Constitution, constitutional laws, ordinary laws, decree-laws, legislative decrees, regional laws, regulations for enforcement of laws, European regulations and directives. The antinomies between sources of law and their solution. The legal rules for the profession of biologist. Legal rules for animal experimentation: European and national rules. Conscientious objection to animal experimentation in the national rules. The food safety.

Prerequisites and examination procedures
The module of Deontology is independent from the module of Bioethics. The assessment for the module of Deontology is based on an oral examination.

Course syllabus
The course will present fundamental elements of following subjects. Origin of bioethics: Why is it born and what are the new issues at the core of debate? Main normative ethics theories in the bioethics reasoning: teleological ethics, deontological ethics, virtue ethics. Bioethics and research ethics: scientific research on human beings and informed consent (I); scientific research on human embryos with attention to embryonic stem cells (II); Framework programme for research and innovation (2014-2020) in Europe, H2020, art. 19 Ethical principles (III). Bioethics and the enlargement of moral consideration circle: Animal ethics and scientific research on non human animals; environmental ethics and preservation of nature.

Exams
The exam consists in an essay to be discussed in an oral test. The essay must be handed in (via email) 3 days before the exam. In the oral test knowledge of each lecture topic is expected.
