Learning objectives
Fornire le conoscenze fondamentali inerenti le caratteristiche chimico-fisiche delle tre matrici aria, acqua e suolo;
fornire le conoscenze inerenti i principali inquinanti ambientali presenti nelle tre matrici aria, acqua e suolo;
illustrare infine possibili metodologie di disinquinamento chiarendo anche quali sono le politiche da attuare ai fini della tutela e della sostenibilità ambientale.

Goals
Provide the fundamental knowledge regarding the chemical and physical characteristics of air, water and soil;
provide knowledge on key environmental pollutants in the air, water and soil;
Finally illustrate possible methods of environmental remediation clarifying what are the policies to be implemented in order to protect and environmental sustainability.

Course content
- Introduction to environmental chemistry: General aspects, contamination sources, reactions among the pollutants, transportation. Legislation in force; environmental monitoring.
- Atmosphere and pollution: atmosphere structure and composition; gaseous pollutants : CO, CO2, SO2, NOx, O3, CH4, BTX, ecc; green house effect and acidic rains; stratospheric ozone depletion (CFC); photochemical smog; aerosol particulate matter.
- Natural waters: main characteristics and parameters (pH, BOD, durezza, ecc.); ground water and contamination sources; deputation procedures.
- Soils: main characteristics, structure and composition; sediments; cationic exchange capacity; organic pollutants and heavy metals as soil contaminants; absorption and biodegradation; fertilizers and nutrient substances; soils reclamation and bio-remediation.
- Toxic heavy metals
- Urban waste and dangerous and toxic waste
- Analytical methods for pollutant analysis
