Learning objectives
History and politics of North Africa and the Middle East

The course will introduce the students to the evolution of Islamic political doctrine and to some of the key themes surrounding the discussion of religion and politics in the Muslim world. The course will also analyze the relationship between oppositional Islamic parties and government across a range of settings. These themes will be analysed by looking at both local contexts, analysed through historical lens, and trans-regional phenomena. The students will thus acquire a basic understanding of the relationship between Islam and politics and will be enabled to understand , away from stereotyping and unhelpful generalizations, the complexities of the MENA region.
