Instrumental Analytical Chemistry Applications
A.Y. 2018/2019
Learning objectives
Introduce diffraction analytical methods and their main applications in inorganic, pharmaceutical and materials science; provide the basics of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H and 13C), mono and two-dimensional order of the structural characterization of organic molecules. We will also dealt with the basics of NMR spectroscopy in the solid state.

Course syllabus
Course objective
to highlight the analytical application of powder diffraction in material chemistry and to furnish the basic notions of 1H and 13C (mono- and bidimensional) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy for the structural elucidation of organic compounds. Some basic notions of solid state NMR will also be given.
Course content
A Module - principles of diffraction analysis, practice of diffraction analysis, qualitative and quantitative phase analysis, ICDD Powder diffractions files, NIST standard reference materials, microstructure characterisation. Examples of industrial applications of powder diffraction in the field of pharmaceuticals and materials.
B Module - Principles of Mass Spectrometry (MS), practice of MS, structural determination of organic compounds, applications of HPLC-MS. The basis of the 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Chemical shift and spin-spin coupling. Dependence of chemical shift and spin coupling from the structure of organic compounds. Pulsed NMR techniques (mono- and bidimensional). Examples of interpretation of NMR ad MS spectra.
Recommended reading
- Analisi di Materiali Policristallini Mediante Tecniche di Diffrazione, Guagliardi & Masciocchi Ed.s, Insubria University Press, Varese 2007.
- H. Friebolin, Basic One- and Two-Dimensional NMR Spectroscopy, VCH.
